TheraFlu is a brand of over-the-counter cold and flu medicines, from Novartis that contain different groupings of various cold and flu symptom medications. The original version of TheraFlu (Novartis) contained Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) (1000 mg), Chlorpheniramine maleate (4 mg), Dextromethorphan hydrobromide (30 mg), and Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride (60 mg). A Canadian version is sold as NeoCitran. A British company, Reckitt Benckiser, markets a similar product as Lemsip (Lemsip is available in a variety of flavours and strengths containing up to 1,000mg of Paracetamol, and 12.2mg Phenylephrine hydrochloride). They also sell Theraflu Warming Relief in day and nighttime varieties, which contain alcohol and Acetaminophen.

Because Pseudoephedrine is used in the production of Methamphetamine, the original formula has been removed from production and a number of alternative formulations have been brought to market. Many users however consider the old TheraFlu formula to be more effective than the new formulations. The primary difference between the old versions and the new is the substitution of phenylephrine hydrochloride for the Pseudoephedrine.

TheraFlu is produced in several forms and flavors, but is best known for its original powder form which is mixed with hot water and then consumed as a beverage. Other forms include “SoftGel”, syrup, and strips similar to Listerine PocketPaks breath fresheners.

Lemsip is a well-known brand of cold and flu remedies in Ireland, the United Kingdom and Australasia. It is manufactured by Reckitt Benckiser. Their original and best-known product is a lemon-flavoured hot drink (hence the lem in Lemsip) containing 650 mg of paracetamol (an analgesic), 10 mg phenylephrine hydrochloride (a decongestant) and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).

A new stronger formula, “Lemsip Max” has been added to the range (containing 1000 mg of paracetamol and 12.2 mg phenylephrine hydrochloride ), which is available in tablet form as well as a powder sachet. In recent years, Lemsip Max ‘All-In-One’ has been formulated, which contains guaifenesin, an expectorant used to bring up phlegm from the airways. The brand has grown to be a household name in the UK and now includes a range of related products including Lemsip Cold & Flu Capsules, decongestant nasal sprays and capsules, throat lozenges and cough medicine.

In 2002, Poet Laureate Andrew Motion admitted to taking a daily cup of Lemsip, claiming it helped him write poetry.

Codral is a brand name of cold and flu medication manufactured by Johnson & Johnson and sold primarily in Australia & New Zealand. Codral is the highest-selling cold and flu medication in Australia.[1]

Codral products include Codral Original Formula, containing pseudoephedrine, and Codral New Formula, which substitutes phenylephrine as pseudoephedrine is a chemical precursor to methamphetamine.

Codral’s slogan Soldier On is an enduring feature of its advertisements, but as the medication allows cold sufferers to mask their symptoms, is also associated with presenteeism in the sense of showing up to work with a contagious illness, instead of taking sick leave.
